It seems likely that the composition of this work was connected with a penitential service held in the Marienkirche in Mühlhausen to commemorate the disastrous fire which had destroyed large parts of the town on the 29th May 1707, but it has not been possible to discover documentary evidence to prove the correctness of this supposition
