Gretchaninoff (1864-1956) was a very active piano teacher in St. Petersburg and Moscow. He wrote a considerable number of piano pieces for children which have the rare quality of educating the ear and forming the taste of the pupil with respect to repertoire of the great Russian tradition as well as the world of romantic music.
